Operating your business with environmentally friendly energy resources is a smart way to meet your sustainability goals and strengthen your company’s brand. But producing renewable energy can require a significant financial investment and a large amount of real estate. That’s where the Bright Energy Choices program comes in.

Bright Energy Choices is a voluntary green energy program available in participating public power communities. This program gives businesses the opportunity to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) equal to all or part of their energy consumption. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to boost your sustainability profile and encourage the development of renewable resources.

This program reflects the core values of public power: local control, community-driven decisions and a shared commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Whether you’re a business leader, policymaker, or resident looking to support clean energy, Bright Energy Choices provides a flexible and transparent way to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.

To learn more about Bright Energy Choices, contact your local municipal electric utility for availability, or reach out to us directly at info@mrenergy.com.

What is a REC?

A REC is a digital certificate created when 1 megawatt-hour (1,000 kilowatt-hours or kWh) of electricity is generated by a qualifying renewable facility — such as hydro, wind, or solar generators — and fed into the electric grid. Each REC is assigned a serial number so it can be tracked.

RECs represent “environmental attributes,” but not the energy itself. RECs and energy are two separate products and are often purchased and sold separately. RECs purchased through the Bright Energy Choices program are retired by Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) on behalf of participating member utilities and their customers. A REC cannot be transferred or sold once retired.
