Powering with Solar

Over the past decade, MRES has taken strides in renewable energy development within its membership area.

Marshall Solar Plus

Construction is now underway on Marshall Solar Plus (MSP), a 10-megawatt solar farm in the member community of Marshall, Minnesota. The project will include a 5-megawatt, four-hour battery storage facility that will provide added reliability and help move electrical production to when it is needed most.

MSP will produce about 23,030 MWh of electricity annually, or enough to serve over 2,000 homes. The project will include over 21,000 solar panels on approximately 55 acres of land owned by WMMPA along North 7th Street near the Archer Daniels Midland Company and the 7th Street substation owned by Marshall Municipal Utilities.

MSP's solar modules were installed in spring 2024, and the installation of the battery-storage system is planned for September 2024. MSP is expected to become operational in October 2024, with a tentative ribbon cutting planned for early summer 2025. When complete, the project will be interconnected to Marshall’s distribution system, and the energy provided by MSP will be included as another clean, renewable resource in the wholesale power supply mix that MRES provides to its members.

Currently, the project is owned by Marshall Solar Plus LLC, an entity of US Solar. WMMPA will provide financing for, and acquire ownership of, the project at the commencement of MSP’s operations.

US Solar is a developer, owner, operator and financier of solar generation and energy-storage projects focusing on emerging state markets and community solar programs. The company provides deep experience in the solar industry, currently holding one of the largest development portfolios in the region.
